"Families R Us"

Kort om prosjektet

‘Families R Us!’

This project will celebrate the richness of ‘family’ across Europe. It will seek to promote the ethos that all families are important, therefore encouraging children to feel a sense of worth in their own family environment. The project will explore ‘family’ on four levels:

  1. The family at home

  2. The School Community as a family

  3. Our National Family

  4. Our European Famely

  • Monse                     - Catalonia (Host school coordinator)

1. Objectives Achieved

It was agreed that the project has had a successful start and strong bonds have been forged throughout the ‘family’.

i) Families R US Community Brochure:

All schools submitted pages to be included in the brochure. Due to software difficulties St Brendan’s document was unable to open and so the school will email it the group ASAP.

        ii) Penpals

The ‘penpals’ scheme has been successfully introduced. All schools have received and sent at least one piece of correspondence.

        iii) Mascots

Most schools brought a mascot along with them on the mobility.         Although there were some small confusions, all schools are now clear about how the mascot arrangement will proceed. (See New Activities part iv)

2. New Activities

i)‘Penpals’

Schools are to continue with the ‘penpals’ arrangements and will try to send one more letter each before the next mobility. If appropriate within each setting, individual class teachers may be encouraged to extend communication links by having children send emails.

ii)’A Day in the Life’

Each school will produce a Powerpoint Presentation entitled ’A Day in the Life’.  Each school will interpret the title as best they deem fit for their school setting. These presentations will be shown and shared at the next mobility.

iii) Puzzle/Jigsaw

Birgit suggested an activity and displayed a wonderful example

of a jigsaw that her children had produced. The group agreed that it would be a good idea as a whole project activity. Each school will produce six exact copies of the puzzle that they have made. The puzzle will be based upon a local legend or fairy story. These puzzles will be brought to Norway and distributed so that each school can display them.

iv) Mascot Diaries

Birgit very kindly supplied all of the schools with a diary for their mascot. It was agreed that mascots would return to their home countries so that photos of the mascot ‘at home’ could be inserted at the beginning of the diary. The mascots are then to be posted on to the school that they will visit before Friday March 5th. Mascots will travel in the following order

        Spain-Belgium-Germany-Ireland-Norway-England-Spain

3. Future Mobilities

Norway:

The date for the mobility to Norway was confirmed as

June 7th – June 11th. Toril pointed out that visitors will need walking shoes and waterproofs. They should also be reasonably fit as activities will include trekking and canoeing.

Germany:

The dates for Germany are confirmed as November 15th – 20th. Please note that the return date is on a Saturday as the school has a special event for us to attend on Friday 19th.

Eire:

The dates have been confirmed for February 2011 as discussed.

England:

June 2011 – Dates to be confirmed later in the year.

 4. A.O.B

Luc raised the idea of children communicating directly using SKYPE. It was agreed that each school would contemplate whether this was appropriate to their own school setting. Schools who wish to take part will open a SKYPE account and bring the details to the Norway Mobility in the Summer.
